Tips for Choosing Coordinated, Natural Spring Outfits

Spring is one of the best times of the year for family photos! With blooming flowers, warmer weather, and longer days, it’s the perfect season to capture beautiful memories. One of the most common questions I get from families is, “What should we wear for our photoshoot?” The key is to choose outfits that are coordinated yet natural, ensuring your photos feel timeless and effortless. Here are my top tips for selecting the perfect wardrobe for your spring family session.

1. Choose a Soft, Spring-Inspired Color Palette

Spring is all about light and airy tones. Consider incorporating colors like:

• Pastels (soft pinks, blues, and lavenders)

• Earthy neutrals (beige, cream, light gray)

• Muted greens and yellows for a fresh, natural touch

Avoid neon colors or overly bright hues, as they can be distracting in photos. Instead, opt for soft, complementary colors that blend well.

2. Coordinate Without Matching

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same outfit! Instead, aim for coordination by choosing a color scheme and mixing shades or adding textures. For example:

• Mom can wear a flowy pastel dress

• Dad can wear a light blue button-up with khaki pants

• Kids can pick neutral or floral outfits they feel comfy wearing

This creates a balanced, cohesive look without feeling too uniform.

3. Keep Patterns Minimal

A subtle floral or gingham print can add a lovely touch, but too many patterns can be overwhelming. If one family member wears a patterned outfit, have others wear solid colors to maintain visual harmony. Stick to light, nature-inspired patterns that enhance the seasonal feel.

4. Choose Comfortable & Breathable Fabrics for Outdoors

Outdoor spring sessions often involve walking, sitting on grass, or even playing with little ones. Select fabrics that move easily, such as:

• Cotton

• Linen

• Light knits

Avoid stiff or heavy materials that may look uncomfortable in photos.

5. Add Layers & Accessories

Studio or outdoor sessions, don’t hesitate to add some dimension with layers and accessories. These options also function as an added prop or quick outfit change to add options to your gallery.

• Light cardigans or denim jackets

• Flowy scarves or simple jewelry

• Neutral-toned shoes or sandals (avoid bright sneakers)

Accessories should complement the outfit without overpowering it.

6. Plan for Barefoot Moments

If your session takes place by the sand or water, barefoot shots can add a dreamy, natural element.

7. Think About Your Location

Your outfit choices should match the setting of your photoshoot. For example:

• A pastel dress works beautifully in a flower field

• A soft blue and white outfit complements a lakeside session

• Earthy neutrals blend well with wooded trails

Final Thoughts

Spring family photos are all about capturing love, connection, and joy in a fresh and natural way. By choosing outfits that feel effortless yet polished, you’ll create images that are timeless and beautiful.
