A Behind-the-Scenes Look at a Day in the Life of a Photographer

Ever wondered what goes into capturing those perfect moments? As a professional photographer, my days are filled with creativity, planning, and a little bit of magic. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at a typical day in my life:

Morning: Planning and Preparation

Every great photoshoot starts with preparation. In the morning, I review my schedule, confirm upcoming session details with clients, and prepare any gear I may need. From selecting the right lenses to ensuring batteries are fully charged and backup equipment is there just in case, every detail matters.

I may have my "emotional support coffee" handy. I'm not a big coffee drinker in general but my husband makes an amazing cup of joe, so I like to join him before he heads to work. Doesn't mean I finish it though...

Midday: Editing and Client Communication

When I’m not on location or in the studio, I’m often at my desk editing photos. This is where the magic happens—selecting the best images, adjusting lighting, enhancing colors, and perfecting each capture. I also use this time to communicate with clients, answering questions and providing updates on their galleries. I try to stay off the phone during this time as much as possible but it's not for the reason you may think! In addition to answering texts and emails during the day, I homeschool and care for our three kiddos. With a busy house, I feel like I scare my wedding clients if they can hear my two oldest trying to maime each other over a piece of candy they stole out of the kitchen in a coordinated effort to undermine what limited authority I have.

Always up to no good.

Afternoon: Photoshoots

This is the most exciting part of my day! Whether it’s a family session at the park or an engagement shoot downtown, I love capturing genuine connections and beautiful moments. I’ll guide my clients through poses while keeping things relaxed and fun!

Evening: Wrapping Up

After a day of shooting, I back up all the images to ensure they’re safe. Then, I’ll start sorting through the photos, selecting the best shots to edit further. It’s a busy but rewarding process that ensures every client receives images they’ll treasure.

This is just a little taste of the many things I do through each day. Being a photographer is more than just taking pictures; it’s about telling stories and properly preserving memories. I’m so grateful to do what I love every day!
